Write to Act - A Playwriting Examination
The Write to Act syllabus consists of a series of examinations in nine grades, which can be taken by individuals or pairs or groups of children or adults.
Qualities of excellence
Teachers can use Write to Act to develop qualities of excellence in the writing and
presentation of drama, through practical work, both creative and technical, and the gradual acquisition of knowledge and understanding of dramatic language, style, structure and expression.
Complements curriculum
Write to Act can be used throughout primary, secondary and post-school education. As
St Albans School has found, the syllabus valuably complements curriculum work in English and Drama. It can also be used for extra-curricular work in drama and theatre,
including preparation for school events such as play productions and assembly; or for local and national events such as community and arts festivals.
The aims
The aims of the course are to promote
- the art of story-telling;
- creative writing in the form of play scripts;
- the reading and understanding of established playwrights’ scripts;
- an understanding of the structure and development of scripts and plays; and
- the experience of testing scripts in performance.
The objectives
By the end of this course a student will have
- participated as an individual or as a member of a team in the creative writing process;
- developed his/her individual and team organisational and presentational skills;
- worked on a script that required actor involvement;
- developed an understanding of staging concepts;
- developed an understanding of the respective roles of the writer, director and actors; and
- developed an understanding of the technical dimensions of a script.
